Have you ever seen the movie Multiplicity? Michael Keaton plays a suburban husband, construction foreman and father who’s got more to do than he can possible manage in a day. The movie premise provides him the opportunity to “multiply” himself so he can be in two (or three or four) places at once.
Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it?
Since we’re not in Hollywood and I can’t perform magic, we’ll have to settle for a real-world solution to the problem.
The answer is not for you to do more.
I’ve been a business owner for over 8 years. For part of those I did it all myself. Like you, I’m smart and hard-working. I’ve never been afraid to work to make the business successful.
But the day will come when you can’t do any more. You run out of time or energy or both. I don’t want that to happen to you.
Here’s what I’ve learned to help “multiply” my success.
- Do the things that only you can do
You might enjoy posting to Instagram or buying the office supplies, but if you are spending time on those tasks what’s NOT getting done?
- Train. Delegate. Repeat
Yes, I know. You like things done a certain way. That’s why training is first, then delegating is a breeze. Hire well, train even better and empower others to help. SOP are a godsend! If you haven’t started creating your standard operating procedures, this is the perfect time to begin!!
- Have an advisor or trusted resource
There are going to be times when you need perspective and insights from someone else who’s been in your shoes, or who can see what you’re missing. Top CEO’s of major corporations and boot-strapping startups all benefit from outside advice.
It took me several years to realize I’m a CEO. My job is to keep an eye on the vision and mission of my business as well as doing the work, the books and the social media.
How can I help you embrace CEO mode?
